RWA Jargons – What is Tokenomics

Tokenomics refers to the economic model of tokens, designing issuance, distribution, incentives, and burning mechanisms that impact their value and sustainability. Key elements include:

  • Total Supply: The maximum number of tokens, e.g., Bitcoin’s 21 million.
  • Circulating Supply: Tokens currently in the market, affecting liquidity and market cap.
  • Distribution Mechanism: Tokens distributed via ICOs, airdrops, or mining.
  • Use Cases: Tokens used for transactions, governance, or staking, driving demand.
  • Inflation/Deflation: Supply regulated through burning or minting tokens.

For example, MakerDAO adjusts DAI supply via stability fees to maintain its dollar peg. Well-designed tokenomics enhance project appeal, attracting investors, as seen in Uniswap’s UNI airdrop incentivizing participation. Poor design can lead to price volatility or project failure, such as hyperinflation causing token devaluation. Investors evaluate tokenomics through whitepapers and audits to ensure transparency and sustainability. Tokenomics is a key metric for assessing crypto project potential, likely influencing more industries’ business models in the future.
