RWA Jargons – What is Digital Asset Custody, Securities Custody

Virtual asset custody and securities custody aim to protect investor assets, but they differ in nature, regulation, and operations.

Virtual Asset Custody: Involves secure storage of cryptocurrencies (e.g., USDC), addressing risks like hacking and private key loss. Techniques like cold storage, multi-signature wallets, and multi-party computation (MPC) ensure asset security. Regulatory frameworks are evolving, requiring KYC/AML compliance. Providers like Coinbase Custody and Fireblocks offer professional solutions for institutional and individual needs, supporting DeFi staking and off-chain settlement services.

Securities Custody: Manages traditional securities (e.g., stocks, bonds) under strict regulations, such as the SEC’s customer protection rules. Custodians must segregate client assets to prevent commingling and protect investors via SIPC insurance in case of bankruptcy. Providers like Bank of New York Mellon offer established custody services.

Virtual asset custody is technically complex, addressing cyber threats, while securities custody operates within a mature framework with robust protections. Both play critical roles in financial markets, with virtual asset custody likely to grow as blockchain adoption increases.
