RWA Jargons – What is DeFi Protocols (Decentralized Finance Protocols)

Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols are blockchain-based financial applications that provide lending, trading, and liquidity mining services through smart contracts, eliminating traditional intermediaries like banks or brokers. Operating on public blockchains like Ethereum, they ensure transparency, security, and global accessibility. For example, MakerDAO enables RWA lending via its DAI stablecoin, with a market size of $436 million. Other prominent protocols include Uniswap (a decentralized exchange), Aave (a lending platform), and Curve (a decentralized stablecoin exchange). DeFi protocols reduce costs through automation and decentralization, enhancing financial inclusion by enabling global access to financial services. However, risks arise from smart contract vulnerabilities and market volatility, as seen in 2022 when multiple DeFi protocols were hacked due to code errors. DeFi’s growth potential is significant, with 2024 market revenue estimated at $261.7 billion, attracting institutional and retail investors. Their interoperability allows users to transfer assets seamlessly across platforms, such as borrowing on Aave and trading on Uniswap. In the future, DeFi protocols may further integrate with traditional finance, driving innovation, but they must address regulatory and security challenges.
